Protect Your Oral Health with Root Canal Therapy

The root canal procedure is designed to alleviate pain, halt the spread of infection, and protect the structural integrity of a damaged tooth. In many cases, it is the only treatment option that can save a tooth from being extracted. If you are experiencing persistent dental pain, the team at Torrado Dental in Rochester, NY, can perform root canal therapy to restore the comfort and strength of your smile. Drs. Eduardo Torrado, David Attardi, and Andrianna Shumova are dedicated to protecting our patients' oral health. We offer sedation and use the gentlest techniques to ensure that you experience little to no discomfort during treatment.

Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Modern-day root canal procedures are relatively painless and very effective. Before the treatment was commonly performed, the primary solution for an infected tooth was extraction. Root canal treatment offers a variety of benefits over removing the tooth, including:

  • Protecting surrounding teeth from excessive wear and strain
  • Maintaining natural biting force and sensation
  • Preserving the appearance of your smile
  • Avoid the need for more costly restorative treatment

For most patients, undergoing a root canal procedure is very similar to a routine filling and the treated tooth can last a lifetime with proper care.

How Do I Know I Need a Root Canal?

The most common symptoms of a dental infection are pain and sensitivity. Each tooth is filled with soft tissue called dental pulp. Dental pulp can become infected or inflamed for a number of reasons, such as deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, or facial trauma. It is important to contact our office right away if you experience persistent dental pain or swelling as these are likely symptoms of an oral health issue.

The Root Canal Procedure

In some cases, your entire root canal procedure can be completed in a single appointment. First, we will take a series of x-rays to evaluate the shape of your root canals and determine the extent of the infection. Next, a member of our team will use local anesthesia to numb your tooth and the surrounding tissue to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Sedation is available for especially anxious patients.

After the infection is cleared from inside the tooth, a crown will be placed to protect its structure.

Your dentist will then create a small access hole in the biting surface of the tooth in order to remove damaged or decayed tissue. Once your tooth is fully cleaned out, the dentist will fill its interior with gutta percha, a rubber-like compound. This step is designed to restore the strength and integrity of your tooth. Lastly, we will either seal your tooth or place a temporary filling to allow for healing.

We can often complete root canal therapy, including placing a crown, in just one appoinment.

In some cases, we can provide a lifelike, same-day crown using advanced CEREC technology. Some patients may need to return for a second appointment so we can ensure the infection is completely eradicated before placing a restoration.
